From one of today’s most original writers comes the mesmerizing tale of an exceptional young woman caught up in an otherworldly realm where some will stop at nothing to get what they want. Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world’s most powerful elite organizations—the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige’s wildest antics can’t hold a candle to those of her new charge—an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil…and evil is all too willing to claim her. For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder—and frame Paige for the crime. It’s an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.
Dimestore Magic is Kelley Armstrong’s third novel, in The Women of the Otherworld series, and the first not to be narrated by female werewolf Elena Michaels. Instead, Witch and Coven leader of the North American group, Paige Winterbourne is the protagonist. Dimestore Magic follows the gruelling trials Paige must endure in order to keep her ward, Savannah Levine, daughter of half demon and dark witch Eve Levine.

Paige is an interesting new perspective on life as a Supernatural. Where Elena uses her strength and cunning to uncover the truth, Paige must learn to accept advice from her peers. As daughter of the Coven Leader, before becoming Leader herself, Paige knows more than most about the Supernatural world and is happy to put that knowledge to use.

Like Elena coming to terms with her own violent impulses in Bitten, Paige must learn to overcome her initial impressions of others. She must learn to see Savannah as more than the ordinary 13 yr-old witch and Lucas Cortez as more than just a hated Sorcerer. Armstrong manages to incorporate a message concerning sterotype prejudices while developing a sweet romance that few expect to bloom.

Dimestore Magic begins with a custody case, developed in the mortal world, before delving into something much darker. Satanic rituals, walking corpses and powers beyond control make keeping Savannah safe, and conducting her coming of age ceremony.

Dimestore Magic explores the nature of magic, and learning, as well as giving the first insight into the enormous power that Savannah will one day command. Book Three in the WotOw series, it is followed by Industrial Magic; also narrated by Paige.
Raiding Bookshelves Rating
Judging by the cover: I’m not into it. Paige is meant to be voluptuous and feminine, not seductive. The pentacle necklace is a little too much and doesn’t suit Paige’s own magic. A scroll or a dusty grimoire would have been better suited to her character.Photobucket
